Quattro de Mayo

UPDATE January 2012: www.quattrodemayo.com is now live!

Quattro de Mayo 2012 is only 6 months away. So, request time off work and find a pet-sitter, because this is one event you won’t want to miss. We’ve already began planning for QDM 2012 and will be making some very exciting announcements in the coming weeks. We’ve got new routes, a new venue, new memorabilia and a new website for 2012.

Quattro de Mayo

So, for those of you who haven’t experienced Quattro de Mayo, it is a four day social driving event. During the day, we tackle some of the funnest roads in the country, with some of the greatest views. In the evenings, new friendships are formed as we exchange stories, win prizes and enjoy the scenery. Can’t make it all four days? No problem!

Here’s what people said about Quattro de Mayo 2011:

  • “Weekend of driving and socializing with old and new friends.”
  • “Great event spent driving some of the prettiest roads in America enhanced by the opportunity to share the time and experience with family and friends.”
  • “It is a family reunion where everybody drives the same kind of car! A way to have fun with your car on a weekend getaway where everything is first class but not expensive. A chance to meet nice people who share the same interests!”
  • “It is a great get together for fellow audi lovers/enthusiasts and good fun for people of all ages. If you enjoy driving and talking about all things Audi you will definetely not be dissappointed.”

Quattro de Mayo 2011 – A Recap

Tuesday, May 17th, 2011

Quattro de Mayo 2011 was headquartered at the Brasstown Valley Resort in Hiawassee, GA from May 5-8.  This was the 6th annual gathering of Audi enthusiasts, who come together each year to drive some of the best roads in the North Georgia, Tennessee and North Carolina area.  Nearly 40 cars and more than 65 participants from 11 states and 2 countries enjoyed beautiful weather and stunning scenery.  There were 6 organized routes to choose from over the two main driving days, as well as plenty of time for individuals and small groups to create their own outings.  Upon the advice of a local motorcycle shop owner, we even scouted out a new route that received rave reviews and is a shoe-in for next year’s event.

Horseback Riding

Horseback Riding

The long weekend started for a few of us on Thursday when we checked in at the stables. For once we all had equal horsepower. The two-hour trail ride was beautiful and relaxing and gave us a chance to put the organizing and planning aside and just enjoy each other’s company.  Several attendees took part in trail rides and spa treatments during their stay.

Friday morning drivers meetings started at 9:00. The groups were energized for the day’s outings.  Group one headed out first to the Cherohala Skyway with lunch at Deals Gap before tackling the Tail of the Dragon. This was the day’s most challenging and longest drive and was also the most popular. Group two was headed to the Blue Ridge Parkway and lunch in Bryson City, North Carolina. This small group was pleasantly surprised to find almost no traffic along the beautiful parkway, which enabled them to cover more ground than they had hoped. Group three headed out last for the Cherohala Skyway with a lunch break in Tellico Plains before heading back to headquarters.  We all gathered for dinner on the patio at Brassies at the resort and shared our stories and pictures. The “after party” moved to the common room in one of the cabins for more late-night camaraderie.  One of the groups shared some goodies from a local winery, which became a popular side trip over the course of the weekend.

Saturday’s drives included the Tail of the Dragon with Foothills Parkway, a North Georgia Loop run that encompasses quite a few roads that the Club frequents each year for its annual HelenBack drive, and a run that went only to the Tail of the Dragon. The Saturday Dragon run provided some of the best (and most expensive) scenery with views of 2 Bugatti Veyrons, one Lamborghini Murcielago, and a Ferrari 458 at Deals Gap.  The Saturday drives were scheduled to be shorter so we could get everyone back to the resort in time to head to our photo shoot location. We had a great spot with the lake and mountains behind us to showcase the beauty of decades of Audi design.

Officer Friendly

Officer Friendly

The banquet on Saturday night brought us all back together to share the day’s stories with old friends and get better acquainted with new ones. We had a great mix of founding members, regular attendees and an impressive number of first-timers as well. The raffle was a hit with lots of great prizes ranging from ECU upgrades to free track days to key chains, tote bags and model cars. We even took a moment to celebrate the Moms in attendance with a small surprise gift for each since they chose to celebrate their special day with us. We enjoyed the dinner and the sound of laughter as the winner of the “Officer Friendly” award shared his tale. An innocent moment of having his back end stuck out in the road because the car in front of him didn’t pull up as far as he could have brought on the unwanted attention of a local officer. After the unscheduled detour to discuss the finer points of pulling out of parking lots and the importance of reading your registration (the poor soul’s registration showed his two door car as a four door) the officers (all 4 of them) sent him on his way with a written warning and a recommendation on where to stop to get the best maps of the area.

We bumped into a few late departers on Sunday morning having brunch. The folks from the North East and Louisiana had gotten an earlier start for their long drives home. We know they had lots of good memories packed up to take home with them. As we enjoyed a last meal with friends, we smiled and laughed and knew it had been a successful event.

Every year we come together to celebrate our love of Audi and Quattro, and to enjoy the friendships that have come from this common passion. We hope that you’ll join us next year for the cars, the curves and the community this event brings together.

Everything You Need to Know About Quattro de Mayo 2011

Still thinking about registering?

Links to important information for attendees:

What you need to do before the event:

  • Pay your registration fee. You should have received an invoice email from us via Paypal.
  • Inspect your car. You’ll be spending a lot of time in your car, driving narrow, twisty roads; make sure that your brakes, tires, suspension, engine, etc are in top mechanical shape. Please consider contacting Jim Ellis Audi for a pre-event Tech Inspection.
  • Confirm your lodging arrangements. If you haven’t already booked your room, do so ASAP! If you are sharing a room, make sure that your roommate is still planning on attending.
  • Start planning what to pack. In addition to the usual clothing and toiletries, here are a few things you’ll want to bring:
    • 2-Way Radio. This is not a suggestion, this is required. They need to support ‘privacy channels’, so don’t buy the cheap ones. Here is a very well priced set on Amazon: http://amzn.com/B0014DVIL2. If you don’t want to buy a pair, please reply to this post, and we’ll pair you up with someone else.
    • Umbrella, rain coat, etc
    • GPS
    • Sunblock.  A beautiful day + driving all day with the windows down = sunburn on the left side of your face for some of us…

Quattro de Mayo 2011

Wednesday, March 30th, 2011

Hello friends!

Spring is here, though I haven’t actually seen it. Nevertheless, that means that Quattro de Mayo 2011 is right around the corner; May 5th through the 8th! This year, we are headquartered out of the beautiful Brasstown Valley Resort in Hiawassee, Georgia, near Lake Chatuge.

Quattro de Mayo 2011 Logo

I want to take a moment to personally invite you to this event. While the roads and the cars are, of course, an important part of the event, it’s the people that make Quattro de Mayo so great. Every year, we try our hardest to create a mix of exhilarating driving and social interaction, and this year is no exception.

This year, our schedule consists of 8 routes to choose from:

  • A Scavenger Hunt Thursday evening (earn raffle tickets)
  • Three routes to choose from Friday morning
  • A drive to Helen Friday evening (bratwurst and karting!)
  • And three routes to choose from Saturday morning

We’ve also found over a dozen local, non-driving activites, and will be hosting a banquet, with raffle, Saturday evening.

When you register for Quattro de Mayo 2011, you’ll receive a t-shirt, keychain, sticker, and dinner at the Saturday evening banquet. Can’t make it all four days? No problem.

Want to see what these events are all about? Check out our galleries from 2010, 2009 and 2008!

So, what are you waiting for? Register today!

An update from the Audi Club of Georgia

Saturday, February 19th, 2011

Hello, my name is Eric King and I am the President of the Audi Club of Georgia. I’d like to take a moment to give you an update on the club. Last year, we hosted more events than any previous year, and this year we plan to host just as many events, while providing you with more advanced notice. Attendance at our events has been increasing, so now I’d like to see participation increase.

“What’s the difference?”

By “participation”, I mean discussion before the event, interaction during the event (meeting new people), and more discussion (and pictures) after the event. The Club is on Facebook and Twitter, and many of our members frequent regional discussion forums like Quattroworld and Audizine. All of these sites are a great way to connect with other members to talk about upcoming events, ask questions or make suggestions for future events. If none of those outlets appeal to you, feel free to send me an email if you have a question or suggestion.

Speaking of events, here are some of the great events we have coming up.

In only 2 weeks (March 5th and 6th), we’ll be teaming up with the Peachtree chapter of BMWCCA for a Driving School at Road Atlanta. Drivers of all skill levels are welcome to come. But don’t worry, drivers will be placed in groups based on experience and every student will have an instructor in the car. These driving schools are about learning the art and science of car control and vehicle dynamics.

Check out our Driving School FAQ page on our website: http://www.audiclubga.com/drivingschoolFAQ

Later in March is Waterfalls and Wineries, the first social driving event of the year. Join us on March 26th and 27th as we visit some of the best scenery and vineyards in North Georgia. We ask that anyone considering doing a tasting at the wineries be a passenger. The forums and Facebook are a great place to discuss carpooling. You can register for this event on our website: http://www.audiclubga.com/waterfalls

On April 14th, we’ll be holding our Spring Members Meeting at 7:00pm. We’ll announce the venue location as soon as we get final confirmation (hint: it’s a local Audi dealer). Jim Ellis Audi of Marietta was gracious enough to host us in January.  So, if you’re on the fence, come check us out! These meetings are a great way to find out about the club before committing to an entire weekend with us…we don’t bite, I promise!

The Mitty Historic Races are April 28th through May 1st. The Audi Club of Georgia will have our own parking corral for the event. Stay tuned for more details!

And now, on to my favorite event of the year, Quattro de Mayo! This year, “QDM” will be May 5th through May 8th in Hiawassee, Georgia. Each day, we’ll offer a handful of pre-planned drives through some of the twistiest and breathtaking roads in the country, while spending the nights at the beautiful Brasstown Valley Resort. So, mark your calendars, find a dog-sitter (or reserve a pet-friendly room) and bring the family because we’re planning plenty of family friendly non driving activities, as well. If you’ve never been to QDM, come for the cars and the curves this year, and I promise you’ll be returning to QDM 2012 to re-connect with all your new friends.

Stay tuned as we release additional information about our sponsors and raffle prizes! The latest info can be found on our website: http://www.audiclubga.com/qdm

Finally, we’re working on hosting a Teen Driving Clinic this summer. This type of event presents a new set of logistical challenges, which is why previous attempts never got off the ground. If you have a son, daughter, brother, sister or grandchild between the ages of 15 and 20, please send me an email and let me know if you’re interested in seeing them attend. Our clinic will be unlike the usual ‘Drivers Ed’. We won’t be discussing whether or not you should stop for a school bus on a divided highway or how to negotiate a round-about. Instead, we’ll teach how to control the vehicle in adverse conditions, proper seating position, the importance of checking your blind spot (and identifying when you are in someone’s blind spot), and much more.
In closing, I encourage you to participate in the discussion, as cliché as that sounds. The “club” exists only because of the members, so we’re here to plan events that are interesting to you. I look forward to hearing from you and seeing you at an upcoming event.
